Up to 30% of Southeast Asia's booming data center industry could be powered by solar and wind by 2030, without relying on battery storage, according to a report released today, May 27, 2025, by the London-based think tank Ember.
“Data centre growth is straining power systems in ASEAN, where most electricity still comes from coal and gas,” said Pritesh Swamy, Head of Data Centre Research & Insights for Asia Pacific at Cushman & Wakefield.

And as solar is abundant in all AMSs, it is incumbent upon ASEAN to deploy large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) with battery storage, which this study accordingly thoroughly analyzes, as previously mentioned.
Smart grid can help ASEAN integrate more renewable energy, particularly solar and wind, so as to meet the target share of RE in the energy mix.
Most of the ASEAN Member States have established a smart grid roadmap, with the majority focusing on installing the necessary infrastructures and systems, such as advanced metering infrastructure and energy management systems.
The implementation of smart grid in ASEAN faces several challenges and barriers, which include the high cost of equipment investment, lack of business and financial mechanisms to generate returns, and cybersecurity.
The existing communication technologies, protocols and current practice for solar PV integration are also introduced in the report. The survey results show that deployment of communication and control systems for distributed PV systems is increasing.
Containerized SF6-insulated high-voltage substations are either installed in a sheetsteel container or in a prefabricated enclosure made of concrete they bring their own home with them. As a rule, standard containers that comply with the relevant ISO specifications can be used.
The solution for all of these cases is: containerized,gas-insulated high-voltage substation. These substations bring their own home with them. This does away with costly construction work which can also restrict operation. And if necessary, the substation can move location in its container, together with its foundations.
Container type unitized compact substation Container type unitized CSS compact substation is a complete type tested per latest IEC standard 62271-202 which is comprising a outdoor enclosure containing medium voltage (MV) switchgear, power or distribution transformers, low voltage (LV) switchboards.
An intelligent solution for obtaining direct current quickly and economically is provided by container substations. By integrating the equipment in a modular housing and undertaking rigorous testing off site, Siemens is able to supply fully built and tested modular traction power substations to a consistent and high level of quality.
