Sarawak Energy Commissions Malaysia''s First Utility-Scale
KUCHING, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) has commissioned Malaysia''s first utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Sejingkat Power Plant.
The utilities sector in Malaysia is witnessing significant advancements in battery energy storage systems (BESS), evolving from concept to reality with notable projects underway. The first large-scale BESS project is currently being constructed in Sabah, a pivotal development for the country's energy landscape.
This is the first project in Malaysia utilising ba eries for power generation, capable of producing 60MW of electricity. “Sarawak Energy has invested RM128 million in 22 containerised ba ery units capable of generating power,” he told a press conference a er a working visit to the BESS facility.
The BESS project, with a capacity to generate 60MW of electricity, is the first of its kind in Malaysia, marking a pioneering move toward sustainable energy solutions. “Today, I visited the BESS facility at Sejingkat, which will generate power and supply it through the state grid.
The 60 MW/82 MWh BESS, which was first energized in Dec 2024, shares the site with the soon-to-be-phased-out Sejingkat Power Plant, first commissioned in 1998. The commissioning is a new development for utility-scale BESS in Malaysia.
