2024 Lithium Battery Guidance Document
Lithium metal batteries packed by themselves (not contained in or packed with equipment) (Packing Instruction 968) are forbidden for transport as cargo on passenger aircraft).
Purpose: This SAFO highlights the risks associated with the carriage of lithium batteries in aircraft passenger compartments.
The DGCA issued a new circular which states airlines must report all lithium battery-related incidents to the DGCA. Power banks contain lithium-ion cells - compact, high-energy batteries that can store significant electrical charge and cheaper models lack built-in safeguards.
The DGCA said that power banks and spare batteries will be allowed only in hand luggage and cannot be stored in overhead compartments. India has rolled out stricter in-flight safety norms over the use of power banks and other lithium battery-powered devices.
Airlines have been instructed to report any lithium battery-related safety issues to the DGCA promptly. In light of these developments, travelers should be aware that power banks and spare lithium batteries must be carried in their hand baggage, not in checked luggage or overhead compartments.
