Smarter safety
There are three design philosophies which protect operator and equipment in the event of an arc flash incident, one or more may be adopted within the same switchgear.
Switchgear designed and tested to mechanically withstand the electric arc. Protection is afforded by the containment of the arc within the switchgear and the means to direct the arc gases and debris to a safe area. Passive solutions also include advanced switchgear design features to reduce the probability of an arc flash occurring.
Arc-flash and arc-flash studies are also clarified. This White Paper also highlights a safety concern when HV/MV switchgear fails catastrophically, particularly oil-filled switchgear assembly. Within IEC Standards, HV switchgear are used on systems above 1 kV up to 52 kV. In North America MV is any voltage between 600 V and 69 kV.
Improve safety with our extensive portfolio of arc flash mitigation solutions including arc quenching and arc-resistant switchgear, Power Xpert XGIS switchgear, Power Xpert Dashboard, Power Defense molded case circuit breaker, Insulgard, arc flash relays and more.
It is important for the Duty Holder to request internal arc rated switchgear at MV and LV. LV switchgear can be internal arc tested in accordance with IEC/TR 61641 “Enclosed low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies – Guide for testing under conditions of arcing due to internal fault”.
